There are nights
when you laugh in the darkness,
a choked laughter
as though someone
has torn an old wound open once again.
All because you miss me.
And I
have smiled alone so many times,
pressing my hand against my chest
to keep my heart from breaking free,
whenever your presence
returns loudly through messages.
I remember
those moments when we were close through the screen...
why did they feel so cruelly brief?
Time seemed to twist itself faster,
as if determined
to pull you away from my grasp.
You once told me I was beautiful, especially my eyes,
not knowing that later
those very words would turn into a blade
cutting into longing,
whenever I sit alone
before the screen
reading our old conversations again...
I have loved you deeply, truly, endlessly,
like one addicted to a self-made poison—
knowing it hurts,
knowing it wounds,
knowing there is no way to save oneself,
yet still falling in
as if by instinct.
There are days
when I believe I have forgotten you,
but even the faintest sound,
a familiar corner of the sky,
a passing shade of someone’s clothing
is enough
to bring my entire world crashing down.
Does love come naturally?
No.
It arrives like an unexpected storm,
tearing apart every defense I built,
casting me back into you
like a ruthless destiny.
I smile—
a broken smile, soaked in tears.
Because I miss you in the present days,
when distance still remains
yet emotions feel too close,
Because I miss you in every line of text,
in every moment I wait for the screen to light up,
Because this love cannot be touched by hand,
yet reaches deep into the heart.
Because in pain, I still remember.
In resentment, I still remember.
In love, I still remember.
Even as I try to forget again and again,
my heart has already chosen you…
because it loves you too deeply,
blindly,
and beyond resistance.

POETIC REVIEW
By Dr. Frieda Norma Dela Cruz
The Architecture of Longing in
"The Wound That Bears Your Name"
In "The Wound That Bears Your Name," Trần Thị Lan Anh constructs a visceral testament to modern digital intimacy and the quiet agony of long-distance devotion. Working in collaboration with Musharraf Hussain, Lan Anh captures the paradox of the glowing screen—a medium that bridges thousands of miles yet violently highlights the physical void between two souls.
The poem’s brilliance lies in its unflinching honesty regarding emotional dependency. Lines such as "like one addicted to a self-made poison" elevate the narrative from a simple romance to a profound psychological exploration of love as an instinctual, inescapable force. The imagery is remarkably tactile: a choked laugh in the dark, a hand pressed against the chest to keep a breaking heart contained, and old words transforming into a blade. These metaphors refuse to sanitize pain; instead, they honor it, portraying sorrow not as a weakness, but as proof of a deeply anchored emotional reality.
The structural transition from the male perspective in the opening stanza to the female voice creates a poignant dialogue of shared suffering, culminating in a raw, rhythmic surrender. It is a piece that resonates deeply because it mirrors the quiet resilience of those who love across borders, choosing the torment of remembrance over the emptiness of oblivion. Lan Anh’s appointment as Poet Laureate is a testament to her rare ability to turn digital fragments into enduring art.
