13. The Swallow and the Other Birds   

  It happened that a Countryman was sowing some hemp seeds in a field where a Swallow and some other birds were hopping about picking up their food.  "Beware of that man," quoth the Swallow.

"Why, what is he doing?" said the others.  "That is hemp seed he is sowing; be careful to pick up every one of the seeds, or else you will repent it."  The birds paid no heed to the Swallow's words, and by and by the hemp grew up and was made into cord, and of the cords nets were made, and many a bird that had despised the Swallow's advice was caught in nets made out of that very hemp.

"What did I tell you?" said the Swallow.

Destroy the seed of evil, or it will grow up to your ruin.

Chim bản địa cùng Én xa
Nhảy lò cò cố tìm ra mạch, mì

“Hãy cẩn thận những gì lão rải”
Én kêu, nhắc đồng loại tức thì

« Sao cơ? Lão ta làm gì?»

Các con chim khác rầm rì hỏi han

“Hạt gai dầu lão đang gieo đấy

Hãy nhặt ăn thứ ấy đi ngay

Kẻo rồi khi gặp nguy tai
Lại ân hận chuyện chẳng ai nói gì”

Nhưng lời Én bay đi đâu hết

Các con kia không thiết nhặt tìm

Gai dầu cứ thế mọc lên

Sợi gai dệt lưới bẫy chim thừa dùng

Chim bản địa bị lùng săn bẫy

Mắc lưới gai kêu, dãy thảm thương

“ Tớ đã nói mà, lũ ương

Không nghe thì chịu, hết đường thoát ra”…

Chim ơi, nhớ lời Én nha
Ác cần diệt hết khi mà còn non.

 14.  The Silkworm and Spider  

  Having received an order for twenty yards of silk from Princess Lioness, the Silkworm sat down at her loom and worked away with zeal. A Spider soon came around and asked to hire a web-room near by. The Silkworm acceded, and the Spider commenced her task and worked so rapidly that in a short time the web was finished. "Just look at it," she said, "and see how grand and delicate it is. You cannot but acknowledge that I'm a much better worker than you. See how quickly I perform my labors." "Yes," answered the Silkworm, "but hush up, for you bother me. Your labors are designed only as base traps, and are destroyed whenever they are seen, and brushed away as useless dirt; while mine are stored away, as ornaments of Royalty."

Tằm và Nhện

Tằm nhận dệt hai mươi mét lụa
Cho tiểu thư công chúa vua Sư

Nhiệt tâm, cặm cụi mệt lừ

Nhện đà xuất hiện ư hừ xin thuê

Chỗ ngay cạnh tiện bề giăng lưới

Tằm bằng lòng, Nhện vội ra tay

Nhanh thoăn thoắt, chưa hết ngày

Vài chục mét mạng xong ngay ngon lành

“Này Tằm hỡi hãy dành vài phút

Xem tớ làm, rất tuyệt cú mèo

Cậu thừa biết, cố bao nhiêu

Vẫn còn thua tớ rất nhiều Tằm ơi!”

“Cậu đến là lắm nhời, thích quậy

Mạng cậu làm chỉ bẫy ruồi thôi
Khi người ta ngó đến nơi

Sẽ coi là bụi bẩn rồi quét đi

Còn lụa tớ cực kì quí hiếm

Được dùng cho trang điểm Hoàng cung…”

Dệt lâu nhưng thật bõ công

Chân giá trị, phải bền lòng kiên gan.

15. The Scorpion and the Frog  

  A scorpion and a frog meet on the bank of a stream and the  scorpion asks the frog to carry him across on its back. The frog asks, "How do I know you won't sting me?" The scorpion

says, "Because if I do, I will die too."

  The frog is satisfied, and they set out, but in midstream, the scorpion stings the frog. The frog feels the onset of paralysis and starts to sink, knowing they both will drown, but has just enough time to gasp "Why?"

Replies the scorpion: "Its my nature..." 

Ếch và Bọ Cạp

Bọ Cạp gặp Ếch bên bờ suối

Nhờ qua bằng cách cưỡi trên lưng

Ếch băn khoăn hỏi lại rằng
“Nhỡ đâu cậu lại đốt sằng cắn xiên?”

Bọ Cạp cả quyết liền với Ếch:
“- Cắn cậu để tớ chết theo à”

Vững lòng Ếch cõng Cạp qua

Đến ngang dòng bỗng Cạp ta đốt liền

Tê liệt đến nhỡn tiền cùng Ếch

Biết cả hai cùng chết với nhau

Ếch còn cố hỏi “Tại sao…?”
Cạp cười nhăn nhở: “Tính tao vậy mà!!!”

16. The Salt Merchant and His Ass 

  A  Peddler drove his Ass to the seashore to buy salt.  His road home lay across a stream into which his Ass, making a false step,  fell by accident and rose up again with his considerably

lighter, as the water melted the sack.  The Peddler retraced his steps and refilled his panniers with a larger quantity of salt than before.  When he came again to the stream, the Ass fell down  on purpose in the same spot, and, regaining his feet with the weight of his load much diminished, brayed triumphantly as if he

had obtained what he desired. 

The Peddler saw through his trick and drove him for the third time to the coast, where he bought a cargo of sponges instead of salt.  The Ass, again playing the fool, fell down on purpose when he reached the stream, but the sponges became swollen with water, greatly increasing his load.

And thus his trick recoiled on him, for he now carried on his back a double burden. 

Lái buôn muối và con Lửa

Lái buôn đánh lừa ra bờ biển

Mua muối về bán kiếm chút lời

Gần nhà ngang suối chảy trôi
Lừa trượt chân ngã nhưng rồi đứng lên

Lượng hàng nhẹ đi liền ngay đấy

Bởi nước làm tan chảy muối đi

Chủ hàng quay lại tức thì

Chất thêm muối nặng vào khi mang về.

Đến nơi cũ Lừa kia quen thói

Lại trượt chân quị gối chỗ sâu

Muối tan nhiều hơn lần đầu
Lừa ta sướng với mưu sâu của mình

Nghe Lừa hí, sự tình đã tỏ

Bác lái hay nó dở trò gian

Lần sau bác đã đổi hàng

Bông chèn bao tải, đai ngang thân Lừa

Lừa khấp khởi chỉ chờ gặp suối

Là trượt chân xuống dưới vũng sâu

Nước cờ đã lộ từ lâu

Bông dầm nước, Lừa è đầu chở thôi!...
