Bò chọi nhau và lũ Ếch

Hai Bò mộng chọi nhau chí tử         

Trên cánh đồng, cạnh thửa ruộng lầy

Ếch già vẫn sống ở đây

Sợ run cầm cập mặt ngây cán tàn

«Sao mà bác nhát gan quá vậy?»

Ếch non thưa lúc nhảy lại gần.

«Cháu ơi, mày chưa một lần

Thấy Bò mộng đánh nhau gần chúng ta.

Khi con bại tụt ra ngoài cỏ

Ngã lăn quay xuống hố rêu này

Thì mình bị đè bẹp ngay… »
Sự tình rõ tựa ban ngày tiếp theo

Bò thua trận lao vèo xuống hố

Móng guốc to dậm cổ Ếch già

Ếch con sao thoát được ra

Muỗi ruồi còn chết nữa là Ếch kia…

The Fighting Bulls and the Frog 

Two Bulls were fighting furiously in a field, at one side of which was a marsh. An old Frog living in the marsh, trembled as he watched the fierce battle.

"What are you afraid of?" asked a young Frog.

"Do you not see," replied the old Frog, "that the Bull who is beaten, will be driven away from the good forage up there to the reeds of this marsh, and we shall all be trampled into the mud?"

It turned out as the Frog had said. The beaten Bull was driven to the marsh, where his great hoofs crushed the Frogs to death.

When the great fall out, the weak must suffer for it..

Con Chó và bữa tối của ông Chủ

Chó được luyện mang cơm cho Chủ

An toàn và đầy đủ mỗi ngày

Rất trung thành phận sự này

Dù thơm ngon thức ăn đầy lẵng treo

Chó hàng xóm đi theo khi thấy

Biết bên trong có mấy thứ hay

Vài con đã giở trò ngay

Thử ăn trộm nhưng thua tay cáo già

Một hôm chúng tụm ba bốn đứa

Quyết chặn đường kiếm bữa ăn ngon

Thấy mấy con đã quây tròn

Chó  dừng lại định ngọt ngon giãi bày

Như vậy đã phạm ngay lỗi lớn
Bọn bao vây tí tởn phân chia.
Miếng ngon của Chủ chúng chìa

Chó  cùng nếm, cùng sẻ chia vị đời

Bữa ăn của Chủ thôi rồi
Dừng,  hòng cãi cướp ở đời thắng chăng?!

The Dog & His Master's Dinner  

A Dog had learned to carry his master's dinner to him every day. He was very faithful to his duty, though the smell of the good things in the basket tempted him.

The Dogs in the neighborhood noticed him carrying the basket and soon discovered what was in it. They made several attempts to steal it from him. But he always guarded it faithfully.

Then one day all the Dogs in the neighborhood got together and met him on his way with the basket. The Dog tried to run away from them. But at last he stopped to argue.

That was his mistake. They soon made him feel so ridiculous that he dropped the basket and seized a large piece of roast meat intended for his master's dinner.

"Very well," he said, "you divide the rest."

Do not stop to argue with temptation.

Mẹ con Chuột chũi

Chuột Chũi nhỏ chuyện trò cùng mẹ:

“Cứ bảo con từ bé đã lòa 

Nhưng đâu phải thế,  thật ra
Con nhìn rất rõ cơ mà, mẹ ơi!”

Nghe Chũi nói những lời tự đại  

Mẹ Chũi không tranh cãi nhiều lời

Đưa ra mẩu trầm nhỏ thôi

Bảo con thử nói mẹ coi, thứ gì

Chũi nhỏ cứ xem đi, ngắm lại

Cuối cùng buông “cuội rải đường đi”

- “Thôi rồi, còn biết nói chi

Đã mù, khứu giác làm gì có đâu”

Khoe một chuyện còn lâu mới giỏi
Đâm thòi ra vô khối chuyện tồi.

The Mole & his Mother 

A little Mole once said to his Mother:

"Why, Mother, you said I was blind! But I am sure I can see!"

Mother Mole saw she would have to get such conceit out of his head. So she put a bit of frankincense before him and asked him to tell what it was.

The little Mole peered at it.

"Why, that's a pebble!"

"Well, my son, that proves you've lost your sense of smell as well as being blind."

Boast of one thing and you will be found lacking in that and a few other things as well.

Sói lừa Cừu

Bày Sói núp gần nơi Cừu thả

Có Chó canh vất vả đêm ngày
Cừu ăn cỏ an toàn thay

Lại gần thì Sói nếm ngay đòn thù

Vậy nên Sói nghĩ trò ma mãnh

Để cho Cừu xa lánh Chó ra.

Nói rằng, “Sao giữa chúng ta

Lại thù nhau, cứ bất hòa thường xuyên?

Là do Chó vốn quen kích động

Nếu không ta sẽ sống êm đềm

Dịp nào vắng Chó vài đêm

Chúng mình sẽ thật dịu êm chơi đùa… »

Cừu là lũ a dua ngớ ngẩn

Khuyên Chó nên tha thẩn chơi xa

Nhưng mà vừa rời Chó ra
Sói được bữa tiệc thật là thỏa thuê

Kẻ thù vồ vập thích mê

Bạn thì xua đuổi đáng chê nhất đời…

The Wolves and the Sheep 

A pack of Wolves lurked near the Sheep pasture. But the Dogs kept them all at a respectful distance, and the Sheep grazed in perfect safety. But now the Wolves thought of a plan to trick the Sheep.

"Why is there always this hostility between us?" they said. "If it were not for those Dogs who are always stirring up trouble, I am sure we should get along beautifully. Send them away and you will see what good friends we shall become."

The Sheep were easily fooled. They persuaded the Dogs to go away, and that very evening the Wolves had the grandest feast of their lives.

Do not give up friends for foes.

Cô  thỏ với rất nhiều bạn

Cô Thỏ được nhiều con thú biết

Con nào cũng muốn kết bạn bè

Một hôm chợt lắng tai nghe

Thấy đàn chó đã cận kề rừng bên

Thỏ muốn cậy bạn hiền giúp đỡ

Giúp cho mình xoay xở thoát thân

Thấy rằng Ngựa đang đứng gần

Liền nhờ bạn Ngựa ra ân cõng mình

Nhưng Ngựa vội trần tình là khó

Vì chủ nhân đang có việc giao

Giúp thì bất cứ bạn nào

Cũng đều giúp được, không sao đâu mà.

Thỏ quay sang cậy nhờ Bò đực

Sẽ dùng sừng đuổi húc Chó đi

Bò xin lỗi ngay tức thì

Nói rằng đang chuẩn bị đi hẹn hò

«Nhưng  nhiều bạn đang chờ giúp đấy

Bảo thằng Dê nó ngoáy cặp sừng

Chó kia sẽ chạy tứ tung… »

Có điều Dê bảo rằng lưng mình gày

Sợ cõng Thỏ sẽ gây đau đớn

Sao cô không nhờ đến bạn Cừu

Cừu thưa hỡi Thỏ quí yêu

Chó xơi Cừu cũng nhiều nhiều lắm thay

Túng kế quá Thỏ quay tìm Nghé

Nghé đáp rằng khối kẻ to đầu

Cậy nhờ còn chẳng vào đâu

Thì mình bé nhỏ giúp sao bây giờ…

Tiếng chỏ sủa bất ngờ vang dậy
Thỏ ta đành nhờ cậy bốn chân

Vậy mà thoát, phúc bội phần
Bè nhiều mà bạn khi cần chẳng ai!

 The Hare With Many Friends

A Hare was very popular with the other beasts who all claimed to be her friends. But one day she heard the hounds approaching and hoped to escape them by the aid of her many Friends. So, she went to the horse, and asked him to carry her away from the hounds on his back. But he declined, stating that he had important work to do for his master. "He felt sure," he said, "that all her other friends would come to her assistance."

 She then applied to the bull, and hoped that he would repel the hounds with his horns. The bull replied:

"I am very sorry, but I have an appointment with a lady; but I feel sure that our friend the goat will do what you want." The goat, however, feared that his back might do her some harm if he took her upon it. The ram, he felt sure, was the proper friend to apply to. So she went to the ram and told him the case. The ram replied: "Another time, my dear friend. I do not like to interfere on the present occasion, as hounds have been known to eat sheep as well as hares." The Hare then applied, as a last hope, to the calf, who regretted that he was unable to help her, as he did not like to take the responsibility upon himself, as so many older persons than himself had declined the task. By this time the hounds were quite near, and the Hare took to her heels and luckily escaped. He that has many friends, has no friends.

Gấu và Ong mật

Một chú Gấu đi tìm quả mọng

Lang thang chân va đụng tổ ong

Thân cây đổ, bọng bên trong

Trữ nhiều mật cả đàn dùng quanh năm

Gấu hít mũi dò thăm cẩn thận

Xem ong có quanh quẩn đâu đây

Tình cờ một chú ong bay

Về đàn báo nhãn đến ngày nở hoa

Thấy chú Gấu hít hà thăm thú

Ong tặng liền một cú châm đau

Rồi chui vào trong hốc sâu

Điên lên Gấu húc cả đầu lẫn chân

Muốn phá tổ trong thân cây đổ

Làm cả đàn hùng hổ bay ra

Vù vù tấn công Gấu ta

Gấu giơ chân che mũi - da không dày

Nhưng cũng thật là may sau đó

Có đầm sâu, nước, cỏ gần kề

Gấu thành thợ lặn, cố che

Một cái mũi, đã thành tê dại rồi!

Thà chịu một vết châm thôi

Còn hơn nổi nóng để rồi … om thân.

 The Bear and the Bees 

A Bear roaming the woods in search of berries happened on a fallen tree in which a swarm of Bees had stored their honey. The Bear began to nose around the log very carefully to find out if the Bees were at home. Just then one of the swarm came home from the clover field with a load of sweets. Guessing what the Bear was after, the Bee flew at him, stung him sharply and then disappeared into the hollow log.

The Bear lost his temper in an instant, and sprang upon the log tooth and claw, to destroy the nest. But this only brought out the whole swarm. The poor Bear had to take to his heels, and he was able to save himself only by diving into a pool of water.

It is wiser to bear a single injury in silence than to provoke a thousand by flying into a rage.

Sói và Chó còm

Một chiều Sói rình mò ven xóm

Thấy có con Chó đốm gày còm

Tên này quá đỗi còm nhom

Nếu không đói quá Sói nhòm làm chi

Con Chó gày tức thì lùi lại

Biết  Sói kia muốn hại mình đây

«- Để tôi báo chủ tôi hay… »

Lời chưa nói hết nanh bay đến rồi

May mà còn kịp thời tránh né

«- Ông xem tôi còm, ghẻ thế này

 Toàn xương với da dắt dây

Ăn vào chẳng bõ dạ dày ông đau… »

Chó gày tranh thủ câu đưa đẩy:

« Nói riêng ông, còn mấy hôm thôi

Cưới con gái rượu chủ tôi

Tha hồ xương thịt mềm môi chén tràn

Tôi sẽ béo, nở nang phải biết

Ông mà xơi thì hết ý luôn

Xin ông cố đợi vài hôm… »

Sói kêu «Nhớ nhé» rồi chuồn đi xa

Ít hôm sau Sói ta quay lại            

Thấy Chó gày ở trại Chủ trang

Sói liền gọi nó ra đàng

Chó gày toe toét : «tôi đang sẵn lòng

Mong ông chờ chỉ trong chốc lát

Để tôi kêu «bác Gác» mở rào»…

Nhưng khi «bác Gác» ra chào

Hết hồn, Sói vội chạy lao ra đồng

«Bác Gác» chính là ông chó khủng

Chuyên đi săn, Báo cũng phải kinh

Chớ nên tự hứa hão mình

Tin vào kẻ - biết đinh ninh nuốt lời

The Wolf and the Lean Dog 

A Wolf prowling rình mò, near a village one evening met a Dog. It happened to be a very lean and bony Dog, and Master Wolf would have turned up his nose at such meager fare had he not been more hungry than usual. So he began to edge  toward the Dog, while the Dog backed away.

"Let me remind your lordship," said the Dog, his words interrupted now and then as he dodged a snap of the Wolf's teeth, "how unpleasant it would be to eat me now. Look at my ribs. I am nothing but skin and bone. But let me tell you something in private. In a few days my master will give a wedding feast for his only daughter. You can guess how fine and fat I will grow on the scraps from the table. Then is the time to eat me."

The Wolf could not help thinking how nice it would be to have a fine fat Dog to eat instead of the scrawny object before him. So he went away pulling in his belt and promising to return. Some days later the Wolf came back for the promised feast. He found the Dog in his master's yard, and asked him to come out and be eaten."Sir," said the Dog, with a grin, "I shall be delighted to have you eat me. I'll be out as soon as the porter opens the door."But the "porter" was a huge Dog whom the Wolf knew by painful experience to be very unkind toward wolves. So he decided not to wait and made off as fast as his legs could carry him.

Do not depend on the promises of those whose interest it is to deceive you.

Sư tử và Lừa 

Một buổi Chúa sơn lâm đi dạo

Rất oai phong đạo mạo giữa rừng

Các loải cung kính tránh đường

Chỉ anh Lừa ngố khinh thường be be

Lửa giận thoáng qua khe mắt Chúa 
Nhưng quay đầu thấy đó là Lừa

Chúa Sư tiếp tục đi tua

Móng không cần dọa tên ngu làm gì

Chẳng nên giận dữ một khi

Kẻ xúc phạm vốn ù lì, ngu ngơ.

The Lion & the Ass 

One day as the Lion walked proudly down a forest aisle, and the animals respectfully made way for him, an Ass brayed a scornful remark as he passed.

The Lion felt a flash of anger. But when he turned his head and saw who had spoken, he walked quietly on. He would not honor the fool with even so much as a stroke of his claws.

Do not resent the remarks of a fool. Ignore them.

Ngài Diệc bước thong dong bên suối

Mắt chăm chăm theo dõi nước trong

Cổ dài vươn mỏ săn lùng

Sẵn sàng chộp thứ để dùng sớm nay

Suối trong thấy nhiều bầy cá nhỏ

Nhưng mà ngài Diệc khó hài lòng:

“Các loài nhãi nhép lòng tong

Làm sao xứng miệng cho dòng Diệc ta”

Một chú cá rô hoa bơi đến

“Không cần mi, mau biến đi ngay

Lắm gai, cái lũ chúng mày

Nuốt vào chẳng bõ cổ này bay châm…”

Mặt trời đã ngang tầm đỉnh núi

Họ cá tôm dần lủi xuống sâu

Chẳng còn thấy bóng chúng đâu

Đành xơi ốc núi thò râu ven bờ

Kén cá, chọn canh chờ đại yến

Để rồi sau ngô kiếm không ra

Giống như ngài Diệc nhà ta

Xưa nay nhiều chuyện đến là hay ho.

The Heron  

A Heron was walking sedately along the bank of a stream, his eyes on the clear water, and his long neck and pointed bill ready to snap up a likely morsel for his breakfast. The clear water swarmed with fish, but Master Heron was hard to please that morning."No small fry for me," he said. "Such scanty fare is not fit for a Heron."

Now a fine young Perch swam near.

"No indeed," said the Heron. "I wouldn't even trouble to open my beak for anything like that!"

As the sun rose, the fish left the shallow water near the shore and swam below into the cool depths toward the middle. The Heron saw no more fish, and very glad was he at last to breakfast on a tiny Snail.

Do not be too hard to suit or you may have to be content with the worst or with nothing at all.
